[13:05] <elschlomo> Chris: GSoC didn't work out. But we will be applying next year again
[13:06] <ajs6f> https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/GSOC/Fedora+Summer+of+Code+Ideas
[13:06] <kompewter> [ Fedora Summer of Code Ideas - Google Summer of Code - DuraSpace Wiki ] - https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/GSOC/Fedora+Summer+of+Code+Ideas
[13:06] <elschlomo> Chris: But nevertheless we have a list of todos which were created for GSoC
[13:07] <elschlomo> Adam: Those todos are not the best fit for core developers e.g. javascript client
[13:07] <elschlomo> Chris: check http://www.kickstarter.com/
[13:07] <kompewter> [ Kickstarter ] - http://www.kickstarter.com/
[13:08] <elschlomo> Aaron joined the call
[13:08] <elschlomo> Chris discussed with duraspace people about using kickstarter to fund some work on fedora
[13:10] <elschlomo> duraspace will look into such a funding model and how to entice people to support the project next month
[13:12] <elschlomo> Adam: The unpredictablity of kickstarter is a challenge for most applicants
[13:13] <elschlomo> Adam: There's a lack of involvement of academic institutions, and the cheap and often very good human resources from these institutions could be tapped.
[13:15] <elschlomo> Chris: the idea is then to run an fedora specific crowdfunded GSoC like thing.
[13:16] <elschlomo> Dan: Spring is sponsoring too, but there are caveats, like a dedicated mentor
[13:16] <elschlomo> is needed
[13:17] <elschlomo> Adam: branding of fedora modules "Durex FeSL"
[13:19] <elschlomo> Adam: Serously, what about the corps, that are a bit involved with the community?
[13:19] <elschlomo> Chris: If there's an incentive for the corporations, it's possible
[13:24] <elschlomo> Dan: There are two different levels of committments form the community. People or organizations who build on top of fedora and want to make money from the resulting app (e.g. IBM and apache)
[13:25] <elschlomo> Dan: The second type of company getting involved in such a thing would be mainly interested in building their public image
[13:27] <elschlomo> Dan: e.g. VMWare was interested in integrating fedora, but decided otherwise when looking at e..g scalability
[13:28] <ajs6f> Notetaker switch!
[13:29] <ajs6f> Chris: There's an organizational side to corporate involvement, and a technical side (making the platform more attractive to investment),
[13:29] <ajs6f> and some of what we're doing for 4.x is good for that second side.
[13:30] <ajs6f> Chris and Dan will begin conversation with DuraSpace, etc. about some of these ideas.
[13:30] <mhwood> DSpace folk had a similar discussion last week. We also tossed around the idea of an unfunded program, offering students the opportunity to work on a real project alongside professionals and be recognized for their contributions. Cash would be great, but getting a start on the ol' resumé is good too.
[13:31] <ajs6f> Very true.
[13:31] <elschlomo> people are agrreing with mhwood
[13:34] <elschlomo> Chris: will come back to this in the future after a discussion with duraspace
[13:34] <elschlomo> Next agenda point: the new fcrepo store
[13:35] <elschlomo> Chris: id like some more input from people who have some experiences with the various frameworks and specifications
[13:36] <elschlomo> Chris: especially Transactions and JCR
[13:40] <elschlomo> Aaron: wrote down some of his thoughts and the most important point is that the atomicity of all the operations on a fedora object level is required. But this doesn't very well fit for some existing operations (e.g. setContent()).
[13:42] <elschlomo> Dan: we should take the use cases into consideration.
[13:43] <elschlomo> Dan: An archivist whowrites once and reads often has different requirements than other use cases
[13:58] <elschlomo> Aaron raised the point how to give atomicity without using transactions in fedora.
[13:59] <elschlomo> Adam: When considering the different use cases as raised by Dan it would be nice to have a customizable high level store with or without transactions

[14:13] <elschlomo> Frank will share the code of a PoC with transactions over mutliple resources using spring
